Hair Loss

A client in my practice is totally bald. He told me that he had the fringe hair around the base of his head, so decided totally bald looked better. He is 85. I must admit he looks better than his twin brother who keeps the fringe. You see them all the time, men bald on the top, and fringe or longer around the bottom. The comedian Gallagher had a hat that had hair around the bottom to add to his fringe, nobody would have known had he not taken it off in the show. For years he had very long hair and wore a hat so this time was no different. Men handle being bald in different ways. Some stay in denial, and try the old comb over. Others get god awful hair pieces. Many others get hair implants or join hair club for men. A few will just wear a baseball hat all the time. I don’t care for the baseball hat solution, unless of course you are attending the game. I guess for men it’s a big deal to have a full head of hair. Many men are going totally bald, and frankly, as a woman I like the look. It’s kind of sad though from my view point that men actually think we care what is on their head. If it’s clean, and neat it’s fine with me. One thing I can’t abide is a man with a full head of hair that is dirty, stringy and smelly. Bald is clean, and great to give scalp massage to.

. Women are not so different than men in the issue of hair loss, or thinning. There are two kinds of women that are going bald. Those that accept it and do something about it, and those those don’t. I have a sister in law, which every year her hair gets thinner and thinner. At present you can see her scalp. She has trouble styling her hair. It makes me wonder why she doesn’t do something. Wigs for women, are so realistic looking that you can’t tell they are not real. There are drugs, and surgeries to be done, but many are just in denial. Instead of the comb over, which I have seen a woman do, by the way, many do nothing. Most don’t even wear a hat.

Now I have a coworker that went bald due to Chemo. She wore wigs, and colorful scarves. She looked beautiful. She told me it was a real crisis of self when her hair began falling out by the handful. She knew however, that it would grow back. She took comfort in that fact. She said when it grows back I will never have a bad hair day again. That really impacted me. It made me grateful for my beautiful red tresses.

I guess because women’s hair is her glory, it’s less acceptable to be thin haired or bald. Baldness in some woman is a statement of them owning themselves. I think that was the case with Brittney Spears. As a whole however, women spend a lot more time fixing, washing, and doing hair care, than men. So it would follow suit that if a woman is going bald, she would do more to cover it up, or stop it altogether. As stated though that isn’t always the case, and that’s ok too.
